Name files so versions stack (rev-A, rev-B)

3 minute read·Updated 1 October 2026

You don’t tell Plott which file is the newest. It reads the revision from the file name, the way drawings are already named.

1Names Plott reads

living-room_rev-A.jpg
living-room_rev-B.jpg
living-room_rev-C.jpg ← the one your client sees

Files with the same name and a different revision stack as versions of one design, newest on top. These patterns work out of the box:

A-201_north-elevation_rev-C.pdf
A-201-C.pdf
north-elevation_v3.pdf
A201 North Elevation RevC.pdf

2Designs belong to their folder

The same name in two folders is two designs: Living Room/Render.jpg and Bedroom/Render.jpg stay separate, and each title says which folder it’s from. A sheet number like A-201 is the exception: it names one drawing across the whole project.

3When a name can’t be read

A file whose revision Plott can’t read is shown on its own, without versions, and flagged for you. Plott never guesses the order, because a wrong guess would put an old drawing in front of your client.

Tip: Open notes move across to the newest version, so nothing a client said is lost between rounds.
